The mayor of Castellón, Alfonso Bataller, held Tuesday a meeting with the President and CEO of Lavalin, Alain Russel, at City Hall to discuss possible connections between the train station and the airport before the arrival of the high speed train service, AVE, scheduled for 2015. This was stated in a report from the council.

"It was a first meeting in which we put on the table the need to work to work towards better communications between the station and the airport, as it is necessary so that people arriving by train to the city can have the ability to transfer to the airport in Vilanova d'Alcolea without difficulty, " said the mayor, who expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting.

This meeting was one of several for the Platform Pro AVE lead by the mayor, Alfonso Bataller, in an attempt to prepare the city for the arrival of the AVE.

He said that the connection would undoubtedly be a necessity on which work had already begun, and stressed the importance of implementing the airport for the arrival of tourists to the city. He also said that this would help to stimulate the province’s economy.

Bataller commented that it was "necessary" to maintain contact with Lavalin so that when AVE arrived they could count on an adequate system of communication between the airport and the train station.

-------

In an interview with Europa Press, the person responsible for Marketing and Sales for Ryanair in Spain, Luis Fernández-Mellado, said that Ryanair was “willing to talk to Castellon" and that the question was also when Castellón was willing to advertise and say: “This now works”.

"The day that happens of course we will talk with Castellón and discuss what options may exist for Ryanair," said Fernández-Mellado, who pointed out that at present the 'low cost' Irish company operated at 180 airports and talked "to another 40 who want to take advantage of cheap flight operators, and Ryanair indeed had a direct freeway in many European spots."

Regarding Castellon, which would not belong to the Aena network: he was  "happy to talk to an airport that is not conditioned by Madrid and ...... will probably have commercial freedom to run and play with their costs and prices, and that will give .... an advantage in order to be able to attract new players, which is what happens in other European countries".

A different management
In his view, the airport, which was now owned by the Government, would have a different form of management and not be so tied to the rest of the 47 Aena airports, with some taxes for Madrid, and a local level of repair and maintenance.

The representative from Ryanair regretted that there was no active trade policy for individual airports, unlike most European countries, where airports are private and have the ability to achieve long-term agreements. In Spain, he said, one had to wait year after year to see which budget was approved and if the government had set rates, which the next year could be changed. He described as "nonsense" the decision in July 2012 "to increase them to 50 percent in Madrid and Barcelona."

As for the "free trade" that was sorely lacking at Aena airports, he argued that when other factors beyond the business logic influenced policy, one had to be able to walk while juggling, and one met “grotesque situations” such as when Ryanair walked out in Valencia, then returned, but with much uncertainty. "We had to defend our interests," he justified.

Regarding the role of the committees of routes, Fernández-Mellado indicated that these bodies of implicated administrators and agents met but that in reality Ryanair had neither been invited to the committee of routes, nor understood the function.

The Irish airline maintained that "it should look for long term stability, lower costs and airports operating in a way that will lead to greater profitability."

In this context, Ryanair confirmed its commitment "to invest at low rates, which puts one in a position to achieve volume" that, also "finally opportunes great benefit for them (the airport) as well".
